Co-operative elections in the first phase in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu have been marked by confusion and violence. At many places, elections have been cancelled citing law and order problem, reports Times of India.
However, elections to primary co-operative societies were held all over the state notwithstanding allegations of irregularities.
A large number of police personnel had been deployed to keep the peace.
In Theni district, elections in Periyakulam for the fishermen’s co-operative society were cancelled due to a clash between rival political groups.
Sources say there are reports of widespread tension and violence pouring in from many districts in the state.
