The Ernakulam District Cooperative Bank has started a project ‘Oru Muram Visharahitha Pachakari’ in the district, with the aim of ensuring a healthy and bountiful Onam, Indian Express reports.
This is part of the Bank’s initiative to farm poison-free vegetables and make Ernakulam district self-sufficient.
The bank would offer vegetable seeds and organic manure to around 50,000 households. The District Cooperative Bank will also distribute seeds that will produce about 20 thousand tonnes of vegetables.
The programme includes distribution of chicks that can be grown in chicken cooperatives. The bank plans to sell the vegetables produced under the project to households at the Onam fairs.
