Caving in to economic interventionism, the Yogi government in UP will buy 2 lakh metric tonnes of potatoes directly from farmers to ease their difficulties, reports HT.
The government would make purchases through several co-op agencies such as Pradeshik Co-op Federation, UP Consumer Co-op Society, NCCF and UP State Horticultural Co-op Marketing Federation (HOFED) etc , official sources say.
The procurement will be made at a rate of Rs 5,490 per metric tonne besides an overhead charge of Rs 1,373 per metric tonne, says a recently issued government order.
Uttar Pradesh is the largest potato producing state of the country accounting for about 35% of the country’s total output but has just 1,708 cold storage. Yogi should better focus on this, say agri experts.
