Campco team meets ministers in Delhi

CAMPCO team led by its President S.R. Satishchandra met two Union Ministers J P Naddha and Radha Mohan Singh on the continued controversy on the issue of arecanut being carcinogenic. The team wanted to apprise the ministers with the latest research which has found arecanut therapeutic, not carcinogenic.

Chandra claimed that a provisional report by a central government research institute has found arecanut having medicinal properties and its use in pure form is not harmful to health.

The team submitted copies of the report “Arecanut and Human Health” by the Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI), Kasaragod, Kerala, to J.P. Nadda, Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, and Radha Mohan Singh, Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare in Delhi.

Satishchandra said the report presents scientific evidences to prove that use of arecanut in its pure form does not cause cancer. The report says arecanut seed possesses therapeutic qualities, he said.

The delegation comprised of several cooperators including Konkodi Padmanabha, Yedegere Subrahmanya Bhat, Shivamogga, H.S. Shivakumar, Ravindra J. Hegde and the CAMPCO president himself.
