A revolution in the life of farmers of Lakhnabhanda a village in Assam is in the making. The cooperative has helped farmers grow vegetables and fruits on a real estate the farmers had thought infertile. The poly mulching technique of farming has enabled farmers to grow fruits like watermelon and vegetables such as capsicum, potatoes, gourd, sugarcane and cucumber.
The Lakhnabhanda village of Assam was an ordinary village in 2012. The village was surrounded by a huge chaotic jungle. The villagers did not believe their land would ever become fertile. The IFFCO’s initiative took place in 2012 transforming the village.
In 2012, nearly two and a half acres of land is cultivated for watermelon. In 2013 the size of land increased to 14 acres and in 2014 the 42 acres land is used for the watermelon farming. In terms of production and quality of watermelon was very good.
