Arecanut cooperative organizations’ appeal to the central govt. for imposing a complete ban on the import of the produce has drawn a positive response, reports Hindu.
Vice-president of Malnad Arecanut Marketing Cooperative Society (MAMCOS).Y.N.Subramanya shared the news while addressing arecanut growers in Sagar city.
According to him, over 1.01 lakh tonne of arecanut has been imported in 2016 so far. The import of low quality produce has caused slump in the price, he maintained.
A delegation of MPs from Karnataka and representatives of cooperative organisations including the Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing and Processing Cooperative Ltd (CAMPCO) and MAMCOS have met Union Minister for Commerce Nirmala Sitharaman twice in the past three months.
The MAMCOS is soon likely to start the service of sending SMS alerts on the price of various varieties of arecanut daily to farmers. It intends constructing a new warehouse in Sagar city at the cost of Rs 3.10 crore.
