The famed Amul brand owning Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) has spiked prices of milk by Rs 2 a litre in Ahmedabad and Saurashtra regions and would soon effect an uptick in prices in other areas of the state as well.
The GCMMF’s uptick in milk prices would trigger a similar price development among dairies across the country, experts say. R.S. Sodhi MD of the legendary milk cooperative of Gujarat has put the recent rise in prices down to a mix of factors such as increased cost of production and reduced supply of milk during hot months.
GCMMF procures about 12 million litres of milk and sells around 4.5 million litres a day in Gujarat.
Sources say several dairies including Delhi-based Karnal Milk Foods, Parag Milk Foods, Maharashtra-based Mahanand Dairy and Mother Dairy are keeping a close watch on developments and may follow the GCCMF”s example by raising prices of milk in the next days.
