Farmers in Goa have made allegations of corruption in Goa Dairy but hailed the government decision to allow Gujarat-based Surat district cooperative milk producers’ union to start operations in Goa, reports Goa News.
Farmers have called upon the state govt to extend services of Gujarat dairy to– Bicholim, Pernem, Ponda and Sattari areas as well.
It is worth mentioning that the BJP-led coalition government in Goa has decided to allow Surat district Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union to operate milk co-operatives in some hinterland talukas of the state.
Farmers had held a press conference to air their grievances against Goa dairy including less payment for quality milk and mismanagement in running the cattle feed factory.
Press Trust of India says Goa’s local dairy cooperative milk union opposes the entry of Gujarat-based milk producers’ union saying it will harm the cooperative movement in Goa.
The Goa government has notified Surat district Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union as a dairy to collect milk in addition to the already existing state’s dairy union – Goa State Milk Producers Union, otherwise known as Goa Dairy.
The entry of new player will benefit farmers, says state BJP spokesperson Pramod Sawant.
Headquartered in Ponda, 30 km from here, Goa Dairy was started by the state government in 1975 and handed over to farmers in 1984.
