Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah informed the Rajya Sabha that 45,811 cooperative societies are under liquidation out of 8.32 lakh registered cooperatives in India.
As per the National Cooperative Database, 6.37 lakh societies are functional, while over 1.50 lakh remain non-functional.
Since the establishment of the Cooperation Ministry in July 2021, several measures have been taken to strengthen the sector. Shah also highlighted a steady increase in budget allocations over the past three years, enabling efficient implementation of key cooperative initiatives.
The government aims to revitalize the sector through sustained support and reforms.
