MoS visits Saraswat Bank; encourages Rupee Bank’s merger with it

Chairman and the Board of Directors of Saraswat Co-operative Bank Ltd. were pleased to welcome and receive Hon’ble Dr. Bhagwat Karad Ji, Minister of State for Finance, Government of India on 21st January, 2022 at the Bank’s Corporate Office, Ekanath Thakur Bhavan, Prabhadevi, Mumbai.

Saraswat Bank Chairman, Gautam Thakur welcomed the Hon’ble Minister and introduced the Board members and Senior Executives of the Bank to him. Mr. Sudhir Pandit, the Administrator of The Rupee Co-operative Bank Ltd. was also present on the occasion.

Thakur informed that during his meeting with the Minister at Delhi, the latter had shown his eagerness to help resolve the issue of The Rupee Co-operative Bank Ltd. and had suggested that Saraswat Co-operative Bank Ltd should take over The Rupee Co-operative Bank Ltd.

Accordingly, Thakur & Pandit had various discussions and arrived at a formula for the merger.  The Minister was informed that the merger proposal has already been submitted to the Reserve Bank of India and it is under their active consideration.

The Minister thanked the Chairman and the Board for coming forward so readily to help the large number of depositors of The Rupee Co-operative Bank Ltd.

He assured that he would offer all help from his Ministry to facilitate the smooth merger. He also expressed that he was aware that Saraswat Bank had taken over many weak banks and had helped more than 10 lakhs depositors in the past.

Furthermore, he stated that he and his Ministry are committed to resolving the issues of Urban Co-operative Banks and in this regard, he proposed to constitute a Committee of representatives from Urban Co-operative Banks for early resolution to their issues.
