Boosting pulse cultivation: Singh at IIPR Kanpur

Radha Mohan Singh, Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare visited the Indian Institute of Pulses Research, Kanpur Sunday on 13th March 2016. His visit is aimed at underlining the importance of pulse cultivation.

The Indian Institute of Pulses Research is playing a key role in promoting pulses researches in frontier areas through multidisciplinary approach. The most significant achievement of the Institute includes reduction in crop duration.

During his visit, the minster monitored the research work in the institute and addressed scientists. On this occasion, he also addressed farmers and briefed them about various policies and welfare programmes initiated by the govt of India, read a PIB release.

Readers should note that the United Nations has declared the year 2016 as the International year of Pulses with the aim of increasing public awareness about the benefits of pulses as well as their promotion throughout the world.

Recently Indian Cooperative front paged a story on the issue in which IFFCO MD Dr U S Awasthi also called for an increase in production of pulse grains. An expert on soil-health, Dr. Awasthi argued that cultivation of pulse crops increased micro-nutrients of soil.

Owing to the special significance of pulses in the daily diets of Indian masses, the Government of India has planned and launched several programmes for making pulse production profitable in the country.

India faced the issue of stability in production of pulses till the year 2010 with the total production hovering around 14-15 million tonnes. However, during the last few years the production of pulses has witnessed an upward trend and consistently remained more than 18 million tones.
