The Central Registrar of Cooperative Societies registered a total of 68 societies as multi-state cooperative societies from April 1, 2024 to October 24, 2024.
Among these, 12 societies specifically fall within the credit and thrift sector, with a significant concentration in Maharashtra—11 out of the 12 societies are based in this state.
Karnataka’s Gnanashale Multi State Cooperative Society is the only society outside Maharashtra in this category to receive the multi-state status tag.
This data is accessible on the National Cooperative Database portal, managed by the Union Ministry of Cooperation.
In addition to credit and thrift societies, the other multi-state registrations primarily cover agriculture and allied sectors.
According to the data, there are a total of 1,698 multi-state cooperative societies in India, with 719 focused on the credit and thrift sector. Of these, Maharashtra leads with 381 multi-state credit cooperative societies.
Ironically, many multi-state credit cooperative societies operating in India’s credit sector neither have official websites nor provide easy access to their financial data. A dedicated portal or federation should be established to track the financial status of these societies.
