Shyam Benegal’s film ‘Manthan’ screened at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, delighting fans of Indian cinema. Inspired by Verghese Kurien’s milk cooperative movement, ‘Manthan’ was released in 1976, starring Smita Patil and Naseeruddin Shah.
The screening featured Naseeruddin Shah, his wife Ratna Pathak Shah, Prateik Babbar, Nirmala Kurien, Anita Patil Deshmukh, Manya Patil Seth, and Dr. Jayen Mehta.
Interestingly, reacting to the development, Amul doodle says “Humara makhan, humara manthan…Amul Toast of Cannes,”.
Dr. Jayen Mehta and Nirmala Kurien highlighted Amul’s role in the film’s revival. ‘Manthan’, crowdfunded by 500,000 farmers, won two National Film Awards in 1977 and was India’s 1976 Academy Awards entry. The restored film premiered at Cannes.
