Shamal Patel and Vamalji Humbal have been re-elected as the Chairman and Vice-Chairman of Gujarat Milk Marketing Cooperative Federation (GCMMF) respectively. The elections were held on Tuesday at its Anand Headquarters. GCMMF sells its products under the brand name of Amul
Patel represents Sabarkantha District Cooperative Milk Producers Union (Sabar dairy) whereas Humbal the Kutch Dairy.
It is reported that Gujarat BJP’s top leadership and other senior leaders took special interest in the elections of GCMMF. This led to a smooth transition of power.
The elections for Amul were held on July 24,2020 for five years but according to Gujarat State Cooperative Act the Chairman and Vice-Chairman have to get elected midway–that is after every 2 and a half years. Patel made again to the top post.
Speaking on the occasion, the newly elected Chairman GCMMF said that it was a matter of great honour to lead an institution like federation which was founded by Dr V Kurien. The dairy cooperatives of Gujarat have been successful since last 7 decades due to high values and standards set by its founder leaders like Shri Tribhuvandas Patel and Dr Verghese Kurien, he added.
“The combination of dynamic farmer leadership and professional management has made federation the largest food organization in the country”, Patel said.
GCMMF Vice Chairman Vamalji Humbal mentioned that India has become the largest milk producing country in the world due to the replication of Amul model across the country. GCMMF will continue to work in close coordination with all to strengthen the cooperative movement and also support milk producers of other states if such a need arises.
The election was conducted by the Deputy Collector, Anand in presence of 17 out of 18 members who are chairmen representing their district milk unions in the state
It is worth mentioning that GCMMF follows a unique election pattern. Theoretically, heads of each milk union of Gujarat, which are member unions of GCMMF, elect their chairman. A total of 18 milk unions of Gujarat are member unions of the federation.
GCMMF is India’s largest food products organization with annual sales turnover of Rs 46,481 crores during last financial year. It markets a wide range of milk and milk products under the brand name Amul. Currently, the member unions of GCMMF procure an average 264 lakhs litres of milk every day from 36 lakhs milk producers in 18,154 villages of the state.
It was formed in 1946, it is a cooperative brand managed by Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd. (GCMMF). The model has helped India emerge as the largest milk producer in the world.
