New Indian Express reports the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court has ruled that a cooperative society is not State or a public authority and therefore a writ petition against it is not tenable.
The latest ruling upholds the decision given by a single judge to dismiss petitions filed by the employees of various co-operative societies in 2010.
The petitioner argued the apex court had said in 2013 that a cooperative society would be a public authority in view of the addition of the term ‘Co-operative Societies’ to Article 43B of the Constitution of India, through the 97th amendment.
However, the Bench did not accept the petitioner’s argument and upheld the single judge’s order.
