National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) is actively working to rejuvenate the cooperative movement of north eastern states and several schemes launched by the NCDC in these states are helping in improving the living standards of the weaker sections of the population and also creating employment opportunities through co-ops.

It bears recall that for strengthening dairy co-ops, NCDC launched Meghalaya Milk Mission. Similarly, the development of the piggery sector through co-ops, the Agri co-op lender inaugurated Meghalaya Piggery Mission. There are many other schemes that are running in the North Eastern States.

Giving updates on these schemes, talking to Indian Cooperative NCDC Executive Director Mukesh Kumar said, ” During 2020- 21, NCDC had sanctioned financial assistance of more than Rs 160 crore to the North Eastern States. Our schemes are becoming a big hit in the Northern states and co-ops are also taking advantage. We have sanctioned crore of rupees for the development of piggery cooperatives under the Manipur Piggery Mission”.

“For the development of pisciculture, NCDC launched the fisheries Project in Manipur. Towards helping the dairy co-ops, we had sanctioned more than Rs 200 crore under the Meghalaya Milk Mission. In 2019-20, NCDC sanctioned financial assistance of Rs 209 crore towards development of the Piggery sector through cooperatives under the Meghalaya Piggery Mission”, he informed this correspondent at his office located in Delhi.

Besides, for women and others, we are also organizing training programs. And our regional offices spread in the North Eastern States are also taking stock of the situation. NCDC is also encouraging the primary level co-ops located in the North-East or other states by felicitating them with excellence and merit awards, Kumar asserted.

He further said, apart from the North Eastern States, the schemes launched for the development of the cooperative movement in other states are also running very well.

For instance, NCDC had sanctioned Rs 3,340 crore for creating employment in rural areas and improving the standard of living of farmers in the state of Uttarakhand through cooperatives.” Due to Covid-19 and natural calamities in the hilly areas of the state, the disbursement is very less and the project is of five years, we hope that in the coming days, it will steadily increase”, the NCDC ED added.

Coming to the financial data of NCDC, he said, so far the cooperative lender disbursed a loan of around Rs 24k crore in 2021-22 FY and we hope that we will cross the figure of more than 30k crore at the end of the current financial year. In 2020-21, We had disbursed Rs 24,000 crore and earned a profit before tax to the tune of Rs 747 crore. The Net NPA of NCDC remains zero as of 31st March 2020.
