The recent statement of Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare’ Ashwini Kumar Chaubey in Lok Sabha that arecanut consumption will affect human health has not gone down well with arecanut cooperatives from Karnataka.
Hindu Business line quotes Campco president SR Satishchandra saying representatives of arecanut cooperatives will soon meet the minister concerned to offer their views on the issue.
The Campco president said the Kasaragod-based Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI) had given a report to the Health Ministry saying arecanut is not harmful to the health.
The minister had refereed to studies concluding consumption of arecanut has carcinogenic effect on some organs of the body.
A source is quoted saying some leaders and parliamentarians from the arenacut growing region will also meet the prime minister on the matter.
