The Jharkhand government decided on Thursday to procure paddy from farmers at 500 centres across the state and chalked out steps to help farmers in some of the districts facing below normal rainfall.
In a joint decision by departments of Food Processing and Cooperative, farmers can sell whatever quantity of paddy they produce this season at 500 paddy procurement centres,
Food Processing Minister Mathura Prasad Mahto and Minister for Cooperative Husain Ansari told a joint press conference in Ranch.
They can sell common grade paddy for Rs 1,080 per quintal and Rs 1,110 per quintal for A grade paddy, and will get cheques immediately, the ministers said.
There would not be any limit to farmers selling their produce to the government, they said adding a revolving corpus fund? of Rs ten crore was earmarked with a procurement
target set at 50 lakh quintals.
Procurement agents at all the centres would be trained on uniform specification of paddy and common rice.
Expressing concern over a brief dry spell in some of the 24 districts in July, Mahto said the government had taken steps to help farmers of such districts facing inadequate rainfall, like providing subsidised diesel to irrigate land.
However, several districts have been experiencing good rainfall and we expect food grain production to be at 30 lakh MT, Mahto said.
