DNA reports the housing societies of Thane and other areas in are feeling relieved as the government has extended the deadline to do their account audit to August 31.
There are over 2.47 lakh co-operative bodies in the state, of which 33,000 co-operative societies and 22,000 housing societies are in Mumbai, Thane and other regions.
As per the 97th amendment to the Maharashtra Co-operative Societies Act-1960, housing societies are now required to get the account audit done from a panel of auditors appointed by the government.
The societies failing to do their audits on time are likely to get their registration cancelled. The government has appointed 1,400 auditors in its panel to get the audit done, a source is quoted as saying.
