According to a news report, a cooperative bank in Haryana has displayed photographs of loan defaulter farmers as part of its ” name and shame” plan to recover loans amounting to lakhs of rupees. The cooperative bank says the defaulting farmers have not deposited their instalments for the last several years.
Haryana farmers have, however, decided to sue the bank arguing the move is likely to push farmers to suicide. The opposition Congress has supported the farmers on the issue. Several farmers’ organizations have also slammed the bank’s move.
The bank that has resorted to the ”name and shame ” campaign is an arm of the Haryana state cooperative agriculture and rural development bank. The bank provides farmers with medium and long term loans for buying agricultural implements including tractors.
