Bonanza for weaver cooperatives

Posted on 21 November 2011 by Vimal Kumar

Election year is proving profitable for cooperatives with both state and Centre competing each other to win the voters to its sides. If Mayawati stole the show by announcing his SAP for sugarcane farmers, UPA government has announced bonanza for 15000 weavers’ cooperatives.
The UPA-government at the Centre on Sunday announced Rs 6,234 crore package for 13 lakh weavers, including two lakh in the poll-bound Uttar Pradesh.

The announcement was made by Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma, who holds additional charge of Textiles, days after Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi wrote him a letter asking concessions for the debt-ridden weavers.

The package, to be implemented from January 2012, includes Rs 3,884 crore debt waiver and Rs 2,350 crore for a six-fold strategy to uplift weavers during 12th Plan.

An individual weaver will get benefit upto Rs 50,000, Sharma said. The scheme will help 15,000 weavers’ cooperative societies besides individual weavers.

When asked whether it was an election package, Sharma denied, stating the work on the programme had started a long ago.

“In August, weavers had come to Delhi seeking help,” he said adding that the Finance Minister had also announced Rs 3,000 crore loan waiver for the handloom weavers in his budget speech of 2011-12.

Gandhi who has been touring extensively the state ahead of assembly elections next year, said in his letter to Sharma that the handloom sector has come under stress on account of
stiff competition and credit unavailability.

Amul sets agenda for elections

Posted on 16 April 2011 by Dipak Kumar

It is matter of pride for cooperative movement in India that the movement has captured national attention through one of its products Amul as top leaders are calling each other Amul babies. Credit goes to Da Cunhe creative writers who captured the situation calling both old and young as Amul babies.

The entire story unfolded with Kerala Chief Minister VS Achutanandan calling Rahul Gandhi a ’Amul baby’. Rahul Gandhi  had referred to the 87-year-old CPI-M stalwart’s advancing age during a poll campaign . Achutanandan said that Rahul Gandhi  had come to Kerala to campaign for ’Amul babies’, as the Congress leader himself was an ’Amul baby’.

Quick to capitalise on the chief minister’s diatribe, Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) – which markets its products under brand name Amul – has come out with the ad conceptualised by Dacunha Associates, a Mumbai-based ad agency associated with the co-operative since 1966.

Known for its famous mascot the “Amul baby” with catchy punchlines and the longest running ad campaign ever, the GCMMF has come up with billboard advertisements and promotional posters covering all spheres of life be it cricket, politics, bollywood, business or sports.
